Default faster=better mpg

again, some people claim that driving 85-90 mph gets them better mpg than 65. is there anyway that this is possible?

I've found that when I set the cruise at around 70-75 mph on the highway, I get at least 26 mpg. But any more than that and it'll drop considerably.

I went through a whole tank going between 85-100 and I got 22mpg. Drive back the same route in heavy rain and bald tires going pretty slow, 50-70 and I got 30mpg

Any change in altitude between start and finish? Headwind versus tailwind?

Lots of people don't think about this, but whether you're traveling with the wind or against the wind makes a significant difference in gas mileage also. It's more evident in larger vehicles, like SUV's, but even in a small car like the S2000, traveling into a strong headwind will reduce gas mileage 1-2 mpg. I notice that in my wife's MDX, it's a good 3 mpg at the same speed. We just did a 600 mile round trip in the MDX and I averaged 25mpg going down, but 22mpg going back. On the way back, winds were howling out of the north and I could feel and hear it fighting us.

With the S2000's gearing, I think the engine becomes most efficient around 4,000-4,500 RPM for cruising.

I think it's agreed that the car runs more efficiently (fuel wise) at 65MPH - 75 MPH than 55 MPH.

I think.....

I've always heard that, in general, 45-55 is the optimal speed for fuel economy. But, maybe that information is a little dated. It probably depends a lot on the aerodynamics of the car.
