Lt. Colonel:

As my profile on this board shows, I am 63 years young. I was never a career USAF Officer. When I finished all my education in early '68, we had a draft and a military obligation. Our only choice was which branch and which program. I had always liked the Air Force, so I served my obligation as an Officer there on active duty.

I am not lying about what I have experienced. There would be no motivation for me to do so, would there? I'm not selling anything like those old "magic gas tank pills" that ads in the 50's and 60's claimed would give better mpg. Indeed, I'm not selling anything at all. If anything, I'm bragging on my car. With all the fuel efficiency claims for cars these days, such as hybirds, who has a car that HAS REPEADLY AND ACTUALLY DELIVERED 30 mpg cruising at 90? I do.

Thanks,
Richard

Blacknot:

All my high mileage/high speed highway cruising experiences have been with top up. As we all know, driving with the top down greatly increases drag and decreases fuel efficiency. I really don't want to go 90 with top down, as the wind buffeting would be deadly!

Thanks,
Richard

dolebludger,

You may well have gotten better fuel efficiency at 90 rather than 60. That doesn't mean that the car gets better mileage at 90. It just means that the car with YOU driving it gets better mileage at 90. I'll quote myself from earlier...

My argument is that the car is NOT more efficient at 85-90 than 55 mph. One argument that has been made by others to explain the anecdotal observations is that the fuel map is extraordinarily rich at lower RPMs on early AP1's. This may be true or not.

If it's true then you'd be better off going slower in a lower gear to keep the RPMs in the sweet spot. This would be a counter-intuitive way to drive, but I'll keep an open mind.

If it's not true, then the anecdotal evidence is just due to wind, elevation, measurement error and self-delusion. You'd still be better off MPG-wise at a lower gear at the same RPM than going 90mph, but you'd be better off still driving the traditional MPG enhancing way: slower, but in the highest gear that doesn't lug the engine.

Glad to see another sixty-something on here, as well as another retired officer. I, too, was drafted during the Viet Nam war era.

I don't doubt you, Captain. But I suspect you may be an exception. Either way, it's good you, or bad, if you drive 65mph as I usually do.
