Default Fed up w/ 1-2 crunch!!!

That's it..........I'm taking my S2k in on Monday. Thing is that I've got a MY 01. I'm positive that I've got the problem that everyone is talking about. The problem is that it doesn't do it all the time. Like tonight for instance: I just went out to grab some fast food. First two redline pulls were fine (even got squirly in 2nd ) however on the 3rd run, 1-CRUNCH-2! It's so freakin irritating!
This is probably the 8th time it's done it in a month.

Anyways, when I take it in, do I have to show the service guy what the problem is and if so, what if it doesn't do it? Any suggestions on what to say to the service manager to get this taken care of?

Just tell him that there is a TSB for it, if he read that, he would know that it doesn't do it everytime.

I am taking my car on Monday in for that too. Is it the TSB 54 or 55 that is the 1-2 grind?
Thanks,
-Brandon

I feel your pain dude, I have an '01 as well, and I know I've ground second 50 times or better in 10,000 miles...and not a single other gear has EVER ground...and each gear has had ample opportunity There is just no room for error, the shift has to be perfect, or it'll grind. The original TSB was not for this particular grind, the original problem was that at ANY speed and even with shifting slow the tranny would still grind second...I drove one of the cars with this problem and it was beyond annoying, as well as heartbreaking. This problem was addressed late in the '00 MY production, so it doesn't directly apply to '01's, but it is possible for an '01 to have this problem anyway.

What we have is different, but can be fixed, and will be. The problem is partly because of the Tripple Cone synchro, and partly because of the practically racist tolerence, but no matter, the dealer should replace the gear cluster and clutch for you...no questions asked. If he gives you any static, just print out every thread on this subject, hand them to him, and tell him you want the telephone number of the Zone Manager...trust me, it'll get done. Internally Honda has stated that ANYONE with any kind of said problem WILL have it fixed under warranty.

Does this happen only on redline shifts or in normal driving too? I think that it requires concentration to perfectly coordinate the 1-2 shift and I take special care on this shift and have had no problem at all. One day, practicing my speed shifting I did 8 runs back to back, shifting at red line and nary a crunch. Perhaps the syncros on the 1-2 shift are less forgiving than the others so it crunches unless the clutch is perfectly depressed. I am hoping that this is the situation and that I do not develop this problem, especially after reading the horror stories about some of you leaving your cars at the dealership.

This is a design flaw plain and simple! Don't get me wrong, I love this car, but it has it's flaws. We are talking about millimeters here, so the fact that you don't have the problem doesn't surprise me a bit, but for every 10 of you there is 3 of us I assure you. We should not have to "concentrate" on shifting 2nd gear any more than shifting 3rd or any other, the fact that we feel any sort of apprehension about shifting into 2nd infuriates me...that's the sweetest shift, and this is supposed to be a drivers car! How come I've driven the car 10,000 miles and never crunched any other gear? 2nd gear is just too touchy, plain and simple. I do many shifts without a grind, but sure enough....if I wait a few days....there it is again. And to answer your question, it's not just at redline, this is a timing issue. It seems the clutch has to be at bottom for a split second before shifting, which is very different from the rest, you just clutch and shift at the same time and you're cool. Count your lucky stars that you don't have the problem.

Anyone here with this problem ought to contact DallasEngineer and hecash. See the thread entitled MAJOR S2000 Problems! Seems like there is still a problem with MY2001 cars as well as the TSB "fix".

Maybe if you put enough pressure on Honda, they will do something about this.
