Fill me in about TAX
When buying a new or used s2000, when do you have to pay sales tax?
A) On A new s2000 from a dealer in a state that has sales tax
B) on A used s2000 from a dealer in a state that has sales tax
C) on a used s2000 from a private seller in a state that has sales tax.
D) on a New or Used s2000 bought from a dealer in another state on the internet.
E) on a new or used s2000 from another state that has no sales tax
Can you guys help me shed some light on this information. In GA, 7% sales tax makes a steep dent into the price of a car.

I believe if you buy a car from a dealer in your state, you pay them the sales tax at the time of purchase.
If you buy a car from a private party (in or out of state), you pay tax to your local tax assessor when you register the vehicle.
I would imagine the same is true if you buy a new/used vehicle from a dealer out of state, but I'm not positive.

the long and the short of the sales tax question is that at some point you will pay sales tax..I believe GA has an Ad Valorem tax based on the value of the car..in any event no matter who or where you buy..when you register you will pay

In Texas for a private-party sale w/ no financing they ask you at the time of registration what you paid for the vehicle. That is the only situation I've seen where you have any leeway as to how much tax you will pay.
cannot avoid tax in GA...or almost any other state. I read somewhere that if you declare a purchase price and the price is way low and out of line the DMV requires proof of purchase, and not a hand written bill of sale either more like a sworm affidavit..lie on that and it's a felony.
I live in Washington state. I just purchased a vehicle in Idaho. At the time of purchase, the dealer collected the sales tax based on my place of residence (8.4%) and forwarded it to the licensing bureau in Washington. Had I purchased the vehicle from a private seller in Idaho, I would still be required to pay sales tax at time of registration on the amount I paid for the vehicle. I know of several people who made great deals on cars, and the licensing bureau disputed the amount paid and required further proof of purchase price. I know people do some creative things in the area of sales tax, but this is quicksand. The states get serious when their revenue dollars are at stake.

There is no sales tax here in Oregon, but when you buy a car they will ask you for some sort of proof of residence. This is to prevent people from California for instance from coming up here, buying a car sales tax-free and then driving it back down there.
