that's an understatement. if you don't make sure that all of the old gasket material is removed, you stand the chance of having a fire in your engine compartment. there has been a thread or two about this-- typically they were when the dealer did the oil change and the gasket had deteriorated somewhat. another good reason to do your own oil changes.

EDIT: do an advanced search for "oil fire" and you'll see several threads. always make sure that all of the old gasket is removed when changing the oil filter

 

mine worked its way lose as well.. it was my fault tho.. i put a honda sport oil cap on... luckily it did not go far... got on the heat shield pad under the hood.. but nothing was seriously harmed.. thank goodness

 

talked to the dealer few days ago. the service advisor said that it has happened before, especially on Mondays. offered to wash the engine and a free oil change but will be looking for a new dealer.

 

this is why i do my own oil changes, they're easy to do and fun at the same time(pretty sad huh?)

when i do the oil changes, i make sure the filter is on tight(make sure to lube up teh gasket), the bolt torqued down to spec and add enough oil to put it at the full mark on the dipstick(not too low or high). i like to be perfect when it comes to my own car.

the oil cap on my car is insanely tight??? It is a PITA when I do my own oil changes. I don't see how the cap would come off on its own unless you aren't putting it on tight enough. My first oil change I nearly busted my knuckles trying to take it off. Then again, maybe I just need to work out more....

 

Happend to me as well. Mine just worked it's way loose. I didn't notice any smell, but it sounded like there was a hole in the muffler or something. Checked under the car and saw nothing out of the ordinary and just for kicks I looked under the hood and saw there was no oil cap. I had to take it to the dealer twice for them to find it (Rode my bike to Pep Boys and got a cheap replacement for a few days) cause it got caught between the firewall and was making a rattling noise. Now I'm always careful to tighten the cap well when doing oil changes and check it's still tight whenever I check the oil level.
