I have found that if I gently pull and hold the shifter as far as possible to the left while sliding the shifter from neutral into first that the thunk is avoided and does not happen. I don't have to pull hard, just enough to make sure it's all the way to the left. Whenever I forget, I get the thunk.

Anyone else notice this?

Anyone have an explaination for this? Could fine tuning the shift linkage helpful for this problem?

 

Totally normal.

The thunk is the synchros.

 

It starts there but it goes all the way to the back. The synchros to the trans shaft to the prop shaft to the diff.

 

Actually, what it probably is is that first gear is on the countershaft not the main shaft in the tranny. So, even with the clutch engaged, the two shafts are spinning at different rates until you actually shift into first or second...

Just a guess. In any case it's perfectly normal.

go changed out the tranny fluid to "GM Synchromesh Friction Modified" that should help you shift alot smoother then honda mtf..i just switch to that couple days ago..the car feels alot better then before and i only got 11k right now..

 

This has been posted before, can't remember exactly why it does it but to avoid the "thunk" simply depress the clutch wait about 2 seconds before putting it in gear and you will never have the "thunk" gauranteed!

 

Put the shift lever into 2nd before selecting 1st.....i make it a habit and the clunk is never there
