i'm heading to my dealership to get my oil changed.
I have exactly 3500 miles on the car.
Is this too soon?
I remember one of the techi guys mentioning that my first oil change should come sooner than usual due to the metal shavings that come from new engines.

I got a cool suggestion from another member---

You could change your oil filter *only*, then bring the level back up to full with a half quart of dino oil.... this way your break-in oil package is in there until 7500 miles, and you get rid of lots of debris.

 

If you meet the owner's manual for Severe conditions, then change it at 3750, if not then wait till 7000. At least that's what the owner's manual says.

That being said, I changed mine at 4000, this seemed to be a good compromise to me. Apparently the Austrailian owner's manual instructions are to change the oil at 600 miles, and the warranty is in jeopardy if the this oil change is not done.

I had the factory fill oil analyzed by Blackstone labs and the analysis confirmed that there is indeed a high level of molybdenum in the factory fill oil. There is some debate over whether this is the secret ingredient in the break-in oil or whether it's just residual assembly lube that leaches out into the oil during the first few thousand miles.

Do a search on oil change and Blackstone for more info.

i guess it wouldn't really HURT to change the oil.
i'm getting it done for free, which is a whole other long story so i'll make a post afterwards.
i don't think it'll make any difference performance wise ....but peace of mind i guess.

I just sold an 02 Z28 in order to acquire my new S.

On the Z I changed the oil at 650 and 3,500 miles. I always thought it was better to get the "break-in" oil out of the engine before 1,000 miles to rid it of any metal shavings that could still be floating around. Sure the filter catches most of it, but you never know.

Now I've read so much about not changing this particular batch of oil that I am somewhat confused. I know not to use synthetic before roughly 7,500 miles to let everything seat correctly but how much of an added benefit is the Molybdenum? I am not too sure now whether to change it around 750 or wait until 3750.

 

Changed mine for the first time at 5k mi.

 

My first change was about 3200, went with dino until 6000, and every since have been running Amsoil, and have never used a drop of oil

 

Just thought I'd mention that you should seriously consider the oil filter you're going to use. There's a lot of debate as to whether the stock Honda filter is the best one to be used.

Here's some links I copied from another post that you might find interesting and probably confusing. FWIW the Mobil 1 MI-104 seems to be the best one that's commonly available. Downside is that it costs about $12. The K&N filter is priced about the same, and seems to be equivalent to the Mobil 1. A nice feature of the K&N is that it has provisions for tightening and loosening with a combinantion wrench or socket.
