To deactivate automatic a/c feature on a 2002+ S2000:
1) Turn the ignition switch "on," but dont start the car.
2) Turn fan speed off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob to all the way to the left (panel position).
5) Turn the ignitions switch "off."
6) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while turning the ignition switch "on." Nothing lights up initially, keep waiting. The orange air recirculation indicator on the button will start flashing.
7) Continue holding both buttons until the orange air recirculation indicator stops flashing, then let go.

I bought Nexomats that cover the hump.... although they are custom fitted for S2k, they are not custom fitted for hump, still creates more protection.
as far as AC, I think that above STILL turns on the AC compressor, but you now have option to turn it off. In my 06 there are 2 modes: AC ON and you CANNOT turn it OFF, and AC ON but you CAN turn it OFF.

I think thats an AP1 thing. Mine does it too. Why would you want it off anyway? If you put it on defrost, dont you want your windshield defrosted? A/C Is the only way. A common misconcesption people have is that A/C means "cold", when it means exactly what it says. It "conditions the air", making it cleaner
Dehumidification. You probably don't understand in Reno. It's a must in Houston.
You don't need the AC to supply warm air to the windshield if the humidity is low (or there isn't any). Or to deice the windshield.
Speaking of misconceptions -- all the AC switch does is toggle the compressor. The compressor does not "clean the air".

AC is capable of cooling and dehumidifying air. It doesn't condition or clean it. Not always you need to dehumidify outside air in order to remove humidity inside the car so many times AC is running for no reason, thats why I prefer to control AC myself.
Automatic AC is sort of a safety issue and to force people to use AC once in a while because running AC lubricates the system and prevents breakdown

? Is that just closing the vents? But that isnt hooked up to the electical is it?

I HATE that most cars force you to have A/C on to run air through the defrost vents. I'm capable of turning on the A/C when it's required for dehumidification.
