Default Fixed Rear Window

a local dealership told me it would be over $1000 to fix my rear window. its an 01, so its plastic. well i shopped around and found an upholstery shop that did it for $400! I believe they stitched in the new one. I'll prolly pick it up tomorrow, so I'll post a follow up when i actually see it. for all rights and purposes, thats the hook up.

COOL! I have a '00 and will need a new plastic window some day, and this is good news.

whats wrong with your windows guys? Mine is clear as glass, all you have to do is clean and polish every 4 days.

I think their plastic window probably cracked. Mines did a week ago. It cracked right in the center, 'bout 3 inches in length. I just put some clear scotch tape on it to try to hold it, so far so good!! I'll try to save up some $$ and convert to glass window during the summer.

that sucks, how did it crack in warm sunny california? Was it like below freezing anytime? did it crack on any of the creases? or assuming it was below or above since you said center.

Well, I put the top down one night and it was cold outside, but not freezing cold, and I heard this loud crack( like if you just broked a plastic spoon or fork). It was a vertical crack, and it was one of the creases, right in the center on my rear plastic window. The crack isn't that bad and isn't getting longer even though I have put the top down quite often after it cracking. But yes, the crack is right in the center!!

haha yeh duh of course if it has to crack it will crack on the creases

I have 2 small creases where the window folds if I use my top and they go away if I don't put it down for awhile.

do you know the exact temp it was? At most like 50 atnight where you live right?

I always have it down here and its usualy high 40s at the coldest and I've been doing this for a year.

Heres a tip though...Cleaning and polishing your window makes it softer and probably can handle more cold temps then a non cleaned one is what I'm thinking.

How often did you clean and polish your window?

Man reading all these threads lately make me cringe lowering my window haha. I hear these squeaky noises of the plastic rubbing each other going down and I'm like damn I hope it doesnt crack but you said it was very noticable crack so I'll take note.

Sorry silverknight, too much school work so I haven't got the time to take a look at my previous posts.

It was like 50 degrees outside or so, but my rear window looks pretty old and feels kinda hard. I just bought the car 2 months ago, so maybe the previous owner didn't do a good job taking care of the top. I clean my car often, probably twice a week. Black cars get dirty faster, so I have to clean it often.

Yeh but when I mean by cleaning the window do you actually have the right tools and polish to specifically devote to the window instead of just soap and water whiel your washing the car? I also wash the car every 2 weeks here in winter but I also polish and clean the window seperately every 4 days.

If the tape doesn't work try using a small amount of some clear outdoor window silicone though

mine was cracked. the 2nd dumbest thing i've ever done in an automobile was lowering the top in 25 degree weather. I'd had it for 4 hours.

UPDATE.....

got the car back and the rear window is now perfect. they did the real deal too: took out the seats, the cage and everything. I was afraid I was going to get it back and it would have some backwoods shortcut done it to keep the price down. There was only one thing that raised an eyebrow when he talked to me. he said that he bought a sheet of plastic and cut it to fit. i guess upholstery shops have access to those types of parts??? can't exactly get that at autozone, I don't think. anyway, the only big deal is that its not an OEM part, if that matters to anybody. He did the job for >40% what anyone else quoted me so i'll deal with it.

grand total was $435, tax and all.
