sorry but you still got ripped off for $400. If you didn't notice, you can unzip the window from the rest of the top. I've done it myself for $175

Just got registered onto this site and started reading this string. My plastic window cracked as well putting it up in cold but not freezing temp. Most shops told me the whole top would need replacing, and an upholstery shop said they could not replace the window. Can a replacement be "zipped" into place? Is this considered normal wear or a manufacturing defect?

nope nothing can be zipped and it is considered wear and tear. How was your window condition before it cracked? Was it very clear and soft? Or did it seem like it had not been taken care of to well? (foggy, hazy, scratched, hard)

The plastic was original and was foggy but not creased. The crack is no small tear. The window practically shattered all the way across and even fragmented into a few shards in some areas.

I don't understand why at least 5 shops I talked to all thought the whole top would need replacing? There's even a TSB published on this site about replacing the plastic window. At this point I'd be happy to get away with a $500 bill.

foggy probably leads to yellowing and means it wasn't not properly taken care of and polished often. Creases go away after a period of you not using the top.

What temp was it out when you had done this?
