Formula Red - The answer.....
Several days ago I had posted the question - was the NFR paint on my 2000 S base coat - clear coat. The majority opinion was that it was. What perplexed me and several others was the fact that if one rubbed the painted surface with any type of compound the result would be red residue on the polishing cloth. This is not supposed to happen with a clear coated finish.
I called an aquaintence of mine who is employed locally thru Honda Japan R&D. After some digging he discovered the paint is base coat - clear coat ---- with a twist. At the factory base coat IS mixed with the clear. Therfore the CLEAR is not clear, it is RED!!. The reason for this technique remains a mystery. But it make matching paint when refinishing panels difficult.

I recall posting in your thread that some clears are tinted, but if I read your post correctly, what your insider told you sounds like a single-stage paint; I still think it is far more likely it is a clear coat over base, with tint in the clear.
Thanks NS-S for clearing this up.
Im glad we are able to resolve this. As a NFR owner I'm glad I could help. I have been and owner for 2 years ,and have had some repairs done to my car .I know how you feel about seeing your baby scratched ,it hurts . If you go with a reputable repair shop you should be more than satisfied .
I have nothing to gain by posting BS. I'm sorry if I came off a little to aggressive to the other members. Don't let my screen name fool you I'm only Twiztid sometimes. Most of the time I'm pretty timid .
