I just received my renewal for my car insurance. They "re-rated" the S2K and my insurance is going up $800/6 months. OUCH!!! I'm gonna do some calling around to other companies cause that seems excessive to me. Has anyone else seen extreme rate increases at renewal time after their Insurance Co. finally realized the S2K wasn't just a "Honda"?

wonder if some of it has to do with all the pics of crashed S2000s we see...

if my insurance goes up, I'm going to be selling car... I've got a number in mind of how much I am paying for insurance now... if they break my level, I'm selling...

I took an increase on the insurance over the 99 Corvette I was driving... I thought the idea was that when you gave up horsepower, you payed less for insurance

I know other factors come into play. I am paying 735 every 6 months, and if the number tops 800 on my renewal, the car is going to have to go... its a fun car, but I can have fun in a "less expensive to insure" car...

Lets hope my insurance company does the right thing. They wanted to claim a collision when my tire picked up a bungee cord and scratched up the side of my car...

My current Insurance Co. is 21st Century. They generally have some of the lowest rates in CA so I'm concerned that I may not be able to find anything lower, but I'm looking....

Strike, try Mercury Casualty. They will only take you if you have a spotless record, but the rates are hard to beat.

Sondra,

Thanks. Unfortunately, my record isn't spotless but I'll give them a call anyways. It can't hurt.

Has your record changed; any tickets, wrecks, etc.? I think State Farm thinks mine is a Civic or something; everyone knows all Hondas are economy cars, right?

My record hasn't changed. There are supposedly two tickets on it. One is from 5/98 and I don't remember it. I just made an appt. for tomorrow with the DMV to get a copy of my driving record to verify that ticket. But both tickets predate my last renewal so they shouldn't affect the increase. When I called my insurance company today to find out what the deal was they told me they had reclassified my car which is what accounted for most of the difference.

Sondra - I just got off the phone with Mercury's agent and they quoted me $625 less than my insurance company, with the two tickets. I may be switching insurance companies. Thanks again for the lead.

In case anyone is interested the actual numbers are as follows -

Past 6 months insurance - $1350
Renewal quote - $2105
Mercury quote - $1475

Coverage is 100/300/100 liability, 250 deductible comprehensive, 500 deductible collision, 100/300 uninsured motorist.

It's a lot of money for insurance. I'd be curious to know if anyone else in the LA area is paying significantly less.

GEICO also has good rates, if you're interested in contacting them for a quote

I'm paying about $725/6 mos for both my Acura (no collision coverage) and the S2000, 250 ded., clean driving record
