Default fuel gauge question/problem?

So I know our fuel gauge isn't the most accurate thing in the world, but today a whole new situation arose. I drove around a lot for the past few days and watched my gauge go down to about 2/3. I was a couple of kilometers away from my house and I look down and it says it's full! So I continue driving, figure it's just a temporary reading problem and it'll go back to normal. It never does.

I get back home, turn off my car, wait a couple of minutes and turn it back on. Still reading mostly full [about 2 or 3 blocks off]. So now I'm worried. I dunno if this has happened to anybody else, but will my gauge reading be off now? I didn't really pay attention to the mileage, so I don't know when I should fill up again and I do a lot of driving. I don't feel like getting stuck in the sticks with a dead roadster on the side of a road.

Any input appreciated.

Oh my god, this exact same thing happened to me today, and I was even debating whether or not I should post a thread here about it

My fuel gauge has been working perfectly until now (the second half of my gauge did drop faster than the first half, but not by as much as most people here seem to think). This morning, after I parked my car at work, I had about half a tank remaining. Then while driving home, I looked down and suddenly noticed that I was back to full bars! I have NEVER seen this before.

Anyway, it started to drop rapidly as I continued driving, and after a few minutes, it was down to half a tank again, and seemed to work normally after that.

Should I just take it into the dealer and have them fix it? It sounds like the sensor is broken or something. I was in a very minor accident a few weeks ago, where I was rear-ended, but the person was going < 5 mph. Could that have affected it somehow?

I've been in a situation where I filled up, but the fuel guage was still low. I turned it off then turned it back on, and it was still the same. I drove a few miles, then filled up again. Only then did it reset to full.
