Gas cap sticking?
I know there is a TSB specifically for this, but I am wondering, do your gas caps spin on very loosely then tighten? Or do you kind of have to churn it on a bit for it to close. I brought it into the dealer stating this problem, and the tsb in hand, they told me the threads looked fine to them, but it seems that this keeps happening to me so I dunno if I should take it in again. The Check engine light keeps coming on because the gas cap gets loose, but wanted to know if your gas caps were really loose(as in does it spin on, or do you have to kind of crank at it to shut it) or are also kind of stiff to close.
Geez guy, this is an easy solution. Just spin the cap on normally, and then, grasp the outer edges of the cap with BOTH handsSpread your fingers around the edges of the cap and squeeze and squeeze while you tighten it. Tighten the cap in this fashion until it clicks a couple a times. This will TIGHTEN that cap thoroughly and you'll NEVER get that code again!
So weird, I just bought an '02 a few weeks back. My check engine light came on this morning - major pucker factor - found my gas cap was loose - lots - I got about a turn before it clicked. I figured it was my fault - maybe not. I'll certainly be paying attention to cap tightening.
Thanks

Do your gas caps spin on, or are they sticky, I ask this question because I have an 00 Accord and my gas cap spins on, and then its just a few clicks and its done. My s2k does not, and take manual churning to get the gas cap on. I have been making sure the gas cap is clicking as well after I am done, but the gas cap still has been coming loose every now and then.
I had this same problem. At first, I thought the gas cap was coming loose. I now believe that the threads on the filler tube did not have the correct form, causing the gas cap threads to deform. In time, the deformation on the gas cap threads gets worse, causing them to bind before the cap is on tight. You can tighten the cap as ol' dood suggests, but it only gets worse.
The cap isn't coming loose. It wasn't tight in the first place because it was binding. The threads on the cap relax over time, causing it to not bind anymore.
Last year, I took my car into the dealer with this problem. I didn't know of the TSB at the time. They replaced the cap and the problem seemed to go away. A year later, it was back. I lived with it for about 6 months, and it got worse. It became so bad that I could barely get the cap off, twisting with both hands. I took it back to the dealer, mentioned the TSB and showed them the problem. The mechanic couldn't believe how bad it was.
They replaced the filler tube and now it works like it should.
