Default Gas mileage variance

I took a 220 mile trip on the highway. I ran about 75 most of the way. On the way to my destination I got 30.2 MPG and on the return I got 24.4.

It took me a bit to figure out why there was such a difference in the MPG. Does any one want to venture a guess before I post the reason?

Um, you drove faster? Fuel consumption is directly related to engine load, and engine load when cruising in 6th is related to drag, which rises as the square of speed. If you were in traffic, VTEC'ing more, or using lower gears on a non-freeway that would do it too.

I've gotten <5mpg on the track, and >35mpg cruising. The F20C is quite flexible in its consumption.

Wind at your back on the way there? Heading into the wind on the way home?

Top up on the way there? Top down way home?

Give the man a cigar!!!! Top was up on the way there and top down on the way back. I was quite surprised that there was so much of a difference.

Dude, no kidding! Drag is a HUGE factor in fuel consumption.

According to research, going constantly at 50mph reduces fuel consumption by as much as 25% compared to going at 70 or 80.

Hehe, I rule! But seriously, I get what I think of as pretty good gas mileage right now and I almost always have the top down. I wonder how much better mine would be with the top up?
