Default Gauge Cluster Malfunction

About a month ago I filled up my S2k's fuel tank at gas station and proceded to drive home. During the drive home I noticed that the illuminated bars on the gas guage weren't all lit. Specifically, the guage was reading full but every other bar was lit but the ones in between were dim. I also noticed that numbers on the "trip" odometer were unlegible but the rest of the cluster worked normally.

Every time I restart the car, the cluster would operate normally for the first 20 mins. of driving and then malfunction. Sometimes it would go back and forth. I took the car to my local dealer to have the techs look at it. I was told that the cluster should be replaced.

After the parts were ordered and received, I finally took the car in today to have the cluster replaced under my extended warranty. I get a call from the dealer a few hours later and even after they replaced the cluster and test drive, the same problem exists. The tech said that there might be a short in the wiring. In '03 my S had a similar problem with the cluster malfunctioning(erratic rpm during driving) and it ended up being the ECU.

It's been 2 hours since I was notified and I've heard nothing since. I'm fearing the worst. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions or advice?

TIA for any info.
