In the good old days when I was learning to drive standard in my Prelude and didn't know what downshifting was I could NEVER shift into first until I was at a complete stop. Later on when I learned to downshift (and by downshift I mean REVMATCH, don't freaking shift down and drop the clutch!) the Prelude shifted into first no problem. I have never dropped the clutch on the S2K or tried to downshift without revmatching so I don't know if that would affect it, but my car goes into first while rolling no problem.

Huh. If I double clutch it (clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, blip throttle, clutch in, shift to first, clutch out) I can smoothly and effortlessly get into 1st as high as 25mph or so.

it is not normal...how many miles do you have? It could be the tranny fluid, a loose synchro or you simply need more practice driving your car....
