Default To Get An '02... And Trade In Your '01 ?

Are there really that many of us considering this out there ?? I was at the Honda dealership the other day just picking up an oil filter at the dealership when one of the sales guys came running out telling me that he has a deal that will get me into a 2002 that I can't refuse... So I stopped to think about this:

"Hmmmm.... that sounds nice.... I like the rear window....."
"but I just got my '01... and there's nothing wrong with it except the 6,200 miles...."
"and come to think about it, I spent nearly $35 out the door - and MD 5% taxes suck on purchases this big..."
"and I spent a few bucks and long weekends this year tinkering with my baby to make it mine..."

Then the guy tells me that he can work it with his manager so that they can give me $26,000 for my car...

(another personal pause... and thinking to myself...)

"really ?? $26,000 ?? this sounds great !! This way, I can strategically position myself so that the dealership can meticulously insert a very long and wide pole up my a@$ and personally assist me in losing nearly $10,000 for a marginally newer car !!! I can then pay taxes on a new car all over again !!!"

So I politely said no thank you...

Anyway, this is just my opinion... I promise to respect yours if you respect mine. And I don't want to insult anyone out there who has done this... It just seems so foreign to me of a concept to do this... I picture P Diddy popping open a bottle of Crystal, taking a sip, then throwing it away for a new one because he's already tried it.... Almost seems wasteful....

Thoughts / comments ??

They wanted $36K for the new one? Am I missing something? How would you lose $10K? Unless it was an incredible deal, why do it?

I said "nearly $10,000" based on the delta b/w trade-in price v. new price w/ taxes, tags, freight... while also considering price for additions / modifications on existing car... give or take $1.52...

Unless it was an incredible deal, why do it?
my point exactly....

Don't do it. If you're tempted, see what you can get for the '01 yourself. Dealers always jack you on trade-ins. I've seen used ones in the newpaper at close to a new one's MSRP.

Besides, it's just one year newer, same styling, same engine - the glass rear window is not worth 10K.

Geez. . .that was'nt a good deal at all for you. . .the dealerships are all about making the money for themselves (naturally).

Before I even traded my '00 for the '02, I went back to the original dealer where I paid $6k over sticker in July of '00! (Yeah, I know. . .) I asked them well before the '02's were even about to be allocated what kind of deal they could do. I was hesitant because I really did'nt want to trade my car near my hometown. They assured me not only a "great" deal, in addition, they would be auctioning/wholesaling the car. This was good for me. . . They said as the allocation date came closer, they would put some numbers together.

At any rate, they offered me $24k for my '00 Berlina Black/Red with 33k miles! I traded her in a few months later in New Jersey for the Sebring Silver/Black '02 and received the new S2000 at sticker and $26k for my old baby that had 38k+ miles. . .and Rick's NorthEast "very aggressive" group of driving!

to each his own, but here's my experience.

sold my '01 private party. got $300 less than what I paid for it when new. Put 9,300 miles on the car. Of course, I ate the taxes, registration, etc. My '01 needed new rear tires and was going to need fronts in the next 2,500 - 5,000 miles. Plus my CA registration was going to be due.

i am finalizing the process with my dealer to get an '02 right now. i'm gettting a great deal on the '02 (just as i did on the '01). ** for those of you who haven't bought one yet, listen very carefully... do not believe the bs that some crappy dealers will tell you about over MSRP for the car. there are many, many dealers (even here in S. CA) willing to sell at or even below MSRP - even if the car isn't on their lot and hasn't been test driven and screwed up by hamfisted salesmen).

i am out $. no two ways around that. even after you figure in the cost of new tires. but, i am getting all the upgrades of the '02 and a brand new car.

was it the smartest financial decision? no. but, i'm happy as heck (while i almost never had the top up on my '01 i absolutely hated the plastic rear window).

like most things, it's a personal decision. i'm stoked, my fiance' is happy, and i'm keeping the economy going

I'm sure the dealers would really love to get '00 and '01 owners in to trade up.
Take a typical example using rough figures:
  • Dealer sells you new car for MSRP, makes $4000
  • Dealer buys your '00 for $26,000, sells it for $30,000, makes $4000

$8000 in profit off of one sale? Not bad for a Honda dealership!

I'm doing It, but I only paid 31,800 on my 2000 and it only has 8k miles on it. I got a great deal with all the oem xtras for nuttin.

My02 is on order and I believe they will offer my 26-27k trade in
