A friend of mine has a brother-in-law that recently bought an Infinity G35. This person took the car to a local body shop and had them spray three extra coats of clear on the factory paint job. Paid about $300 for the job. He claims the paint now looks about six feet deep and that the extra coats allow extra protection to the color. It give more room to buff out scratches, etc.
Anyone ever hear of this or had it done? Seems kind of crazy to me but .......?
Some bodyshop told me that having too much clear in the car will cause it to crackle because of the expansion and contraction of each surface over time. Since the last 3 coats will be of different composition, the oem paint may not expand the same way as the new clear.
First, I do not believe that three coats can be sprayed for$300 - even Earl Scheib.
Second, what problem are you trying to solve by doing this?
A proper overspray would require wetsanding and polishing in between coats.
A clearcoat can be considered a regular paint job, just clear - so all the masking would have to be done, and it would be very obvious where they taped. If I looked at the car as a buyer, I would walk away thge moment i saw it.
Have you also considered that not all the clearcoats are actually clear? The CC for Formula Red has color in it.
I think this is a terrible idea, and given the tremendous paint job on the S2000 (at least to me eye it is 2nd only to my NSX of all the cars I have owned), a sacrilege.
there's no need for any extra clear coats on the car. it's more a matter of properly caring for your car and doing all your maintenance, polishing, and waxing with the best stuff out there. i'm personally a big fan of zaino and p21 for my exterior. i won't admit to being some type of magician with it, but patience and the desire to treat my car right has been the perfect combo:
