Does anyone have any suggestions for removing scratches from glass? I took my car to the dealership today to have a dent removed from my passenger door and the tool the guy used to get the dent out left several tiny (around 1-2 inches long) vertical scratches on the window! The scratches are not real deep, but you can feel them with your fingernail. I called my dealer and they are going to check in to possible solutions. In the meantime, I thought I would see if anyone here had any tips, experiences, etc... with this. I will let you know what happens when I hear back from my dealer. Thanks!

Your dealer should buy you new glass and install it.

Period.

I agree with you 100% barry...my dealer has replaced many things in my car under warranty....drivers side kick panel (torn by stereo installers), carpet (slits turned into a big tear), drivers side door panel (seat belt buckle puntured door because it didnt retract all the way), passenger side hoop cover thingy (got scratched when replacing rear window), they even removed my front bumper to retreive the license frame screw bracket thing that fell in when i was installing the plugs...got to love my dealer.

If they caused the damage then they should take care of it. They should make it as good as new.

As far as I know, there is no way to remove scratches from glass. You'd have to grind the whole pane down with abrasive, and if you did that I bet you'd find it was no longer optically correct.

IMHO you should insist on a replacement.

Document the damage with the dealer. Take it to any glass shop and let them have a go at it, bill the dealer. If the result is not satisfactory you can and should insist on replacement. I have had very large scratches removed succesfully from custom display cases (I build wooden ship models for a hobby). A good glazier can work wonders.

I have removed light scratches from auto glass with rubbing compound. Not all glass is as hard as you might think.

Sorry to hear this.

Don't even consider getting the existing window repaired.

Have the dealer replace it with genuine Honda glass. It was their negligence - they have to replace the part.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your responses! This is my first topic posting to this board and I really appreciate all of the feedback. I've only had my car for a little over a week.

I am going to have the dealer replace the glass. After closer inspection, there is even more scratches than I first thought. What negligence! The guy must have heard the tool rubbing the glass. My only fear is that they will somehow screw up my door panel, etc.. replacing the glass. I am going to insist on the best mechanic for my car. Anyway, I will follow up with what transpires as soon as I know. Just read a post that the drivers side window glass is on national backorder... don't know if this is the same for the passengers side....

I'm assuming they did a paintless dent repair on your door, when they do this they use several plastic wedges between the glass and outer belt moulding. This moves the panel away from the glass so they can get their tools between the two. He either scratched it with the tool or the wedge he used. The only proper way is replace, it's safety glass and I've never seen anything that works 100% on safety glass.

Thanks Nick. Yes it was a paintless dent repair. He did a great job removing the dent but ruined my window in the process. I wish I could have been allowed to watch him do the repair, I may have been able prevent the scratches.
