GoPro alternatives: use your iPhone
I tried something similar to this recently but I took an even cheaper approach.
I literally just zip-tied my HTC One M8 to the wind-deflector. Before you all yell at me, I'm sure this will cause damage in the long run, so the next video will definitely be after I get a mount.
Thank you for the advice on how to get better sound through the mic on the inline remote, my video was plagued by horrible wind noise.

Also (for android) I believe the Track Recorder app will allow you to overlay a lot of information to the video, but not the track map.

If $499 is a bit much, GoPro makes a basic camera for $129.99 and I've seen it for $119.00.
That it's battery is built in is a deal breaker for me.

No way I would ever mount a phone outside of a car. The risk of breaking a phone would far outweigh any benefit. Above poster is right. You can get a great go-pro for less than $200 which will provide better video than any phone, and be tough as nails - so that if you do drop it, it probably won't break.
I've been using this technique since a while back when I first got onto track.
Only con that I have is that my iphone has only 16gb.
I usually record the second-last or last session of the day. And HAVE to upload to computer and delete or the videos will take up all the space.

I noticed a slight issue today that would prevent me from doing this method again. The secondary glovebox no longer naturally stops where the rail guides indicates it should. I believe the weight of my phone may have loosened it up. I would spring for the modifry camera mount for any future video or at least a suction cup mount.
