Man, VW's have the worst wiring ever. Almost every VW I've seen has a check engine light on or some quirky electrical problem. I still loved my 97 VR6 though.

To the OP...I would not remove the catback unless you don't want it on. That would have nothing to do with your current problem.

Top two causes most likely are:

1. The "NA turbo timer"
2. The grounding kit

Take those off first and then go from there.

a N/A Turbo Timer....wow.
Maybe N/A in this case means "Not Applicable."

I'd like to add that Autozone no longer scans your car for you.

You must rent their obd II scanner for 180 bucks.

Not a big deal, just giving a heads up.
Rent for $180? That's ridiculous, please tell me it's a typo.

"I was gonna rent a car this weekend, but I didn't have $140,000."

Hmmmm

After examining the plugs and maybe changing them out, I would definitely work my way backwards on the mods starting with anything electrical, i.e. the wiring. I'm with whoever said that first.

I see that you are in SoCal, this seems to be usual situation here where the clerk is too lazy to walk out to your car. I had the clerk in the culver city location tell me the same thing (except he said $140). I came in later the same day and asked the manager. He just said, "let me hang on to your license" and handed me the scanner. This happened a few months later at a Burbank location and I again had to ask for the manager (which loaned me the scanner in exchange for my driver license). I finally broke down and ordered a Actron CP9125 from Amazon.com for $35.

Check the CEL first, sounds to me like a MAF problem with the idle adjusted really high. I had the same problem when I had my sr when I wasn't running a filter (long story), the MAF didnt allow me to pass 3000 in gear and it would die out on idle too, and mine idled at 1500 too btw. An airfilter and a readjustment later it was good to go.
Anyway, hope my pass stupidity finally provides some good use.

The only people whom are making rude remarks are the ones whom know nothing about how to fix the problem. To me it not only sounds like a misfire problem, but I'd remove the ground kit and the N/A timer you done got there. Put the car back to stock, and then work back from there.

I agree and I love the VW part, lol.

Those places do let you use them for free, but they make you buy it and then when you return it they buy it back, so in essence it's free.

New engine. Btw, there's a scuffed cylinder clip on youtube somewhere that shows you what it sounds like; it has this loud tap almost knocking sound, not like valves where they tap.
In my situation when I got the misfire code it was bent valves, but I didn't have that problem with the idle of limiter.
We'll see what the test results bring in, hopefully it isnt too bad. Keep them fingers crossed.
