come to think of it...aren't the new 4.56's just modified 4.57's?? I recall reading a Rick/Strat post saying that Richmond had advised them the 'new' gears were still 4.57 but modified from the previous run to eliminate some (if not most) of the whine...
actually they are very different. they have a different number of teeth.

what would be your source for that information? I have only been able to find this statement about changing of the contact pattern?

"The gear whine has been reduced or eliminated by a slight change in design of the 4.57 . By making slight adjustments to the gear contact pattern, the gear noise has been reduced to eliminate the concern that prevented some owners from making this upgrade. Use of the stock Honda shims (which makes installation easier) was achieved by some minor changes in the machining of the pinion." -- RickSK.com

I don't think I'd mine the gear whine, I'm more worried about strength, I hear the new 4.56's are "slightly weaker" but is it really an issue, I'd probably get them cryo treated anyways. I don't ever dump the clutch on my car, but since it will see a lot of road track and AutoX abuse, I'd like to know I have a fairly bulletproof rear. Hopefully Stratocaster will join in on this thread.
