I am very impressed with the handling of the MR2. Two of them attend our local SCCA autocrosses and do very well. The Turbo is up against the S2000s. The MR2 turbo comes in second behind the similarly set-up S2000 (Hoosiers, Bar) but beats all of us S2000s on stock tires easily. It is a two driver car and both drivers beat the S2000s on stock tires. It only looses to the set-up S2000s by a second or less.

Ok, the S may have snap oversteer, but it is definitely not as bad as the MR2. I've owned both cars. I've taken both to several race tracks. I'm fairly confidant the S2000 is a much easier car to drive.
That doesn't mean that it handles better, really. But realistically this is the guy's FIRST CAR. Hell, most people who drive all their lives have never taken a car to ten-tenths and have never seen a race track in person! The MR2, in stock form, has a much greater tendency to oversteer than the S2000. That's the CAR, not the driver. The driver will drive it so that it doesn't spin, but the car itself is easier to spin than the S2000. Don't believe me? Try spinning a Civic.
If you are interested in handling then the MR2 can be made to handle well. If you are interested in a fast track car, the MR2 has a long way to go.
Also, maybe you don't consider this handling, but the steering wheel feel on the MR2 sucks really bad if you have power steering. Many turbo models came with it. It sucks. Don't get power steering. Trust me. The steering wheel is also big compared to the S2000.
By the time your MR2 starts looking and handling really well, you'll still be making monthly payments on repairs.
