I had a Spoon filter and was very happy with it. It's reuseable and flows better than a K&N-type filter. It does let dirt in, but I didn't gut my box so the box trapped a majority of the dirt -- when I changed my oil there was no dirt in it so I think that is a very marginal thing to grade a filter on as long as you don't gut your box.
it's not the big pieces(read:the dead bird) that you should worry about, the small particle passes thru the foam filter(and cotton based filter) that gets into the motor.

it's a chance some people going to take while someone with OEM filter are willing to have less flow but with better filtering.

you will not see it in your oil because most of it it's burn off in the combustion chamber.

the structure of the air box has more to do with trapping water(and large junks) than trapping small tiny particle(that kind that pass thru foam filter ), so gutted or not, it will not make a huge difference.(look at the L shaped air guide on box lid, it's directing air straight to the filter)

not to bash on you but just to give my opinion on the issue.

The K&N filter is not foam, but has a wire mesh reinforced cotton element that IS cleanable. In fact, parts stores that sell these also sell the "K&N Recharge" kit, which includes a cleaner, and an oil to oil the cotton element. Oiling is a must, as without it, the filter will not trap enough of the dirt to protect your engine.

Thanks,
Richard
and AEM claims their dry filter is just as good, any one bench flow the two yet?

alot of people over oil their K&N filter, it's not a big problem for honda since most of us have MAP instead of MAF but alot of toyota and mustang guy over oil the filter and killed the MAF sensor

the sensor runs around 400 or so new

iam7head - I was saying the K&N does not require replacing.

IMHO All foam filters should be disposed of and replaced after they get dirty (spoon, GReady, HKS etc.) you should not just wash it off and re use it.

I heard about the AEM new and improved filters, They are supposed to be the best filters ever in flow and protection from dirt particles. I have not seen a bench test though.

zbrewha863 - I did not mean to imply Spoon filters did not work. I am just saying they are waaaaaaaaaay over priced. I have used Spoon filters in the past, so I think I have an unbiased opinion (other than the fact that most of the spoon products I have owned were a major let down).

I even dyno'd my ek (semi-built LS Vtec with spoon kevlar intake pipe) with spoon foam filter element vs K&N drop in and the HP#'s were the identicle. price dif was $100.00+.

Just how dirty it was. I had 40k miles and the thing was so dirty that I couldn't see what color it was.
So I'm guessing it was doing its job then?
