Slightly off the subject (and not a flame), but if you routinely do 80-90-100...why not invest in a radar/lidar defense system? Cold clocked at 90 - expect a ticket and just be nice. Maybe a pig, er.. cop, looking under your hood could lead to some gear head conversation and get you off with a warning.

 

Bingo on the CA freeways. If you're not going more than 5 mph faster than the guy you want to pass, you should accelerate during the pass and then return to speed after completing it. Otherwise you're just increasing your exposure. When you have people in close proximity to you while at speed (whether they are in front/back or on the side) you have one less option in the event of the need for emergency manuevers.

And believe me, as long as its not rush hour, 80 mph is easily the average speed in the left two lanes on most major SoCal freeways. And people will not make room for you 9 times out of 10.

You have the wrong idea about " rights" , It matters not that he does not have anything to hide, any American should still refuse an unwarranted search

 

The posted speed limits in California ARE guidelines, except the 65 limit. (now maybe 70) That, by law, is the maximum speed in the state. So a ticket for going 65 and "too slow" should have been thrown out by the judge. (did you try?)

 

I don't think an officer driving fast with his lights off is illegal. Sometimes they aren't allowed to turn on the lights because of priorities or because they don't want to be given away. Don't just assume that they are driving fast for fun.

Sidenote: I've had an asshole cop give me a warning after a half hour of searching for nothing. It happened to be the coldest night of the year.
A different cop gave me a ticket (on two different occasions), though he was extremely polite and professional about it.

I never mess around with cops to much. I would not open my hood, but I would get his badge number, name and precinct

 

I realize the frustration many of you guys have with law enforcement (especially in California, where it seems anyone with a CAI is open to a ticket) but in my neck of the woods, the police have better things to do with their time than opening up hoods looking for Magnecor wires.
I'd like to think that if I was going 90 in a 65 and got caught, the same guy who is writing me the ticket (and let's face it, justifiably so) is the same type of man/woman who is prepared to take a bullet for me.
My brother is a state trooper and loves his GSXR-1100 as much as anyone, but if you're going to speed, it's a lottery. I accept the odds and deal with it. I get caught, I break out the checkbook. Fortunately, KOW, I've been ticket-free for five years now. Maybe it helps that I'm a silver-haired forty-something, but at the risk of sounding melodramatic, for every one uniformed no load ( who shouldn't have made it through the academy in the first place) watching the WTC preparing to collapse, there were 50 who were running TOWARDS it, attempting to save the lives of people who 10 days earlier, may have received a speeding ticket .
Complaining about getting a speeding ticket for doing 90 in a 65 makes no sense. The guy WRITING the ticket? If your recollection is truthful (I'll assume it is) without provocation, then yes, this particular officer sounds like an asshole. As far as the 90 in a 65, when your hand is caught in the cookie jaw, it ain't Mama's fault because she bakes such good cookies.

That's the malarkey the Insurance Industry used to cite when justifying higher insurance premiums for those who own radar detectors. I'm not trying to be a jerk Erik, but maybe it's because I'm older now (37) I almost never drive faster because of my radar detector, and believe me, I don't leave home without one! I think a study was done by the National Motorists Association a few years back, to find out if having a radar detector actually increased people's propensity to speed, and the results were that detector owners were barely driving any faster than non-detector owners. I use my detectors more as a personal insurance policy against getting caught for driving at reasonable speeds (10 to 15 above the limit).
