Default Hardtop latch stuck-can't open

Hi All. Anybody have experience getting a latch open when it's stuck? When I squeeze the latch to open, it is like something is blocking it and it won't compress. I have a new latch, but I can't figure out how to remove the broken one if I can't get it to open. I don't want to damage the headliner in the hardtop. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers!

Is it possible that one of the screws that fastens the latch to the hardtop has unscrewed and getting in the way of the button? You could try fishing a wire above the button. Alternatively you could get a strong magnet and try to pull the screw away.

I've had one of these screws come off before and can see how this could happen.

Thanks for the reply. I got a replacement latch from Japan, so I didn't care if I had to break the old one to get it off. I took a large pair of channel lock pliers and squeezed. It finally gave way and (surprise) it works. Just a couple of scratches. I'm replacing it anyway because the JDM latch is much nicer than the original. Cheers!
