You lower the soft top and its stays in the lowered position while the hardtop is on.

I picked mine up yesterday. When I first saw the box, I was thinking the exact same thing. Thankfully, my parents had just picked me up at the airport and were in our Astro van with the rear seat removed. . .
To make a long story short, the hardtop is a PERFECT fit into the rear of a Chevy Astro. It's about 55"x55"(out of the box) and so is the rear of the Astro.
Got home, spent about 4 hours to install it and a new Eclipse 8443! Installation advice- you only need help for the last 30 minutes or so. If you have a hoist, you could probably do it completely by yourself. You may want some paint as well because the paint on the tabs you have to hammer will flake off.
