So I've been staring at the picture...is it possible a branch or something fell through? the cut is really uneven, a knife would go right through our softtop like butter - I cut mine to remove it, and even with a dull knife the cut was pretty clean.
I thought it looked suspiciously uneven, too, but it wouldn't make sense for a branch to have fallen through it, especially in a closed garage.
OP, did you end up talking to the Range Rover owner?

Cloth? i was thinking if the're going to send my car to an upholstery shop- i'd get like a dark gray cloth?

i got a sebring silver s2000. I think a dark gray would be a nice combo.
Cloth makes for a beautiful top, especially if you go with German Sonnendecke or Sonnenland. Traditionally, most folks shy away from them because they are considerably more expensive than vinyl, unless they're replacing an OE top on a Bimmer, Mercedes, Porsche, etc.

What kind of quote did your insurance give you? If they gave you enough, I'd definitely get a cloth top.
