I had the drivers side latch do that to me. It popped when I was putting the roof back and then wouldn't let the top go down all the way. Didn't however put a hole in the top but was probably trying to...

The plastic undermeath that the latch latches too split down the middle so I was able to push it together and still get the latch clamp over top of it. Sounds like yours had more of a catostrophic failure.

Honda replaced the latch piece that broke under warranty...
Zactly what happened to me... cept that the loose latch punched the hole in my roof

I've read through this thread a couple times, but I'm still confused.

It is my understanding that people are unlocking the latch, releasing the latch, and the relocking the latch (although unhooked) before lowering the top. Is this correct?

How is it that the latches are breaking and puncturing the roof?
That is correct.....release the latch to unhook it, lock it back in place and then lower the top......
As to why they break, I don't know, but I do know that when I brought the roof back up to see what the results of that noise and jerk in the top was.......
There was a hole in the top that matched the shape and dimensions of the latch and it would no longer stay locked in place, and a broken piece of the inner mechanism of the latch fell out into my lap.

If you really wanna see how it is doing it.......
Just release the latch and drop the top. Might do it first time or every time but let the latch flop loose and it'll gitcha.....

I've never seen this, but I have read about it on this board. Here is a previous thread:

Broken convertible latches. Any options?

Good luck getting your top repaired.

I don't get it either.

Where exactly is the top being punctured?

I've opened my top and looked but I still can't imagine how the top is being damaged. I don't understand the "popping" sound. Is it the latch that's popping or the frame for the top?

Someone post pictures. Please.

Take a deep breath my friend.

Look at the side where the clip opens (should be closed), looking at it when the top is down. That is where the tops are being punctured. The popping sound I assume would be the clips breaking internally (as mine did).

Here's some pics of what mine looked like from my old thread (they're not good quality pics, sorry):
