my buddy has an 05 type-s and had a tranny problem a few months back and the car's completely stock. at about 15k, the DARN car had a tranny problem, really bad clicking noise when driving and it got worse when coming to a stop. so he took it into ACURA and they said it was something in the transfer case of the tranny (i forget)!! and they also told him they wouldn't cover it because it's not on the warranty (he has the extended waranty)!! i think that's a bunch of junk to hear when ur car's practically brand new... that's the reason why i didn;t buy any extended warranties for my 2007 s2000 because if anything's to break because of a factory defect, i would expect it to happen before 45,000 miles. anything breaks after that and i'm just thinking because of normal wear and tare.

but as stated, with the hondacare contract there's not much you can do because of the modds. but again, it doesn't hurt to ask them how these modds could possibly cause that problem.

and how long have u had the car for?? i would've taken the car in immediately after the soiunds started.

I took my car (03 S2k) to the dealer today because its been making a very loud rattling noise in the engine bay. It sounds like 2 pistons (or metal objects) are banging into each other constantly and its been doing it ever since I bought the car 2 years ago whenever I come within 2-3 thousand miles from a oil change. I brought to the nearby honda service center near my house about a year ago, which provides the WORST service ever and scams (They disconnected my battery halfway last time and told me I needed to buy a new one). They just looked at it and said it could be normal because s2000's usually rattle, and then blamed it on my fram oil filter. SO..Today, when I brought it to another dealership, they told me it sounded really bad. They are taking my engine apart first thing tomorrow because they say it sounds like a piston is loose and is banging against the valves or something. Anyways, the question I wanted to ask is...They say my extended warranty on the car may or may not cover the cost. The Honda extended warranty should cover this right? I just have a feeling that the dealer is going to try and make stupid excuses to void the warranty.

I know this is a long post, but I need your responses please.

I posted this about a week ago and now they told me whats going on.

They told me the problem was low clearance on the valves, which is covered by the extended warranty. Today, the dealer calls me and tells me that the warranty will not cover it. The manager said it is the first time they denied a warranty while he was there. They said I had "modifications" to my car, so the warranty will not cover. I have had an AEM V2 CAI and Berk Testpipe for about a month, but the noise was made when I bought my car. Of course they wouldn't believe me. The manager gave me the number to the supervisor of the Honda Warranty company.
What do you guys think I should do? I don't think my "modifications" have much to do with low clearance on the valves.
Rule of thumb...if you break your car with illegal mods i.e. testpipe, remove it before you take it to get warranty work. now they probably have you car logged in their system, so even if you take it to another dealership they will know you were denied.

What does two pistons hitting each other sound like? It sounds like a hole in your block big enough to make it not run at all.

How many times can the piston hit a valve before the valve breaks? Once, twice mabey?

Sounds to me like both dealerships have morons working in the service department. Good luck.

Okay I called the warranty company today and the guy was being an ass. He told me my cars a race car. The only thing I can do now is..go to the dealer from before and ask for a print out of my complaint from before I had any mods. Otherwise, the estimate came out to $4900 to fix it. What do you guys suggest?

Go to the other dealership(s) and get your print outs if you can.

It sounds like you may be stuck, but keep at it. Be polite but strong. Dont let them push you around.

If they eventually tell you no way, then DO NOT pay them $4900 to fix that. You can get a built motor for that price (almost at least). If you end up needing an engine check the FS forum.

I hate to say it, but you are a crooked mechanic's wet dream. You just seem so clueless. Sorry.

IMO, what you really need is to find a trustworthy and skilled mechanic and just dump the whole thing in his/her lap. Unfortunately, that's pretty hard to find.

have u taken the car to the dealership for any previouse problems?? if not than u maybe out of luck. they want to see of there were any record of anything wrong with the car as proof that ur car's been making that same noise since after u purchased the car.

but at $4900, i would just buy a used motor and have it dropped in. i blew my motor in my 2002 si and it wasn;t covered either, it was just cheaper to replce it with another used motor.

I also hate to say it, but even though it probably has nothing to do with the problem, this is a likely outcome from installing race-only, street-illegal parts like a test pipe.

Do you mind me asking which Honda Dealership so my friends and I know to avoid it when I'm in the area.

When they tore it down, what did they find? Bent valves? If so, case closed on the extended warranty regardless of your mods or not. If it's not bent valves, then I'd ask for a specific scenario of how the damage to the engine might have happened. They need to be able to describe how it's mechanically impossible for the damage to have occured due to a defect, and how it's more likely to occur because of your modifications. Given the reliability of the S2k engine, I'd say you're fighting a losing battle though.
