Actually, if you're talking about the side turn signals (on the fenders) then there are no laws at all about these other than they can't be red (because they do send light forward). I have no idea why Honda dosn't put the clear JDM side turn signals on the USDM models.

However, if you're talking about the front side-markers and turn signals. Here's why they can't make them clear:
Illegal color of side marker lights. If present, must be yellow in the front and red in the rear (25106, 24003 VC).
Meaning that since the turn signal cover is directed to the side, it must be yellow in the front.

Also, side-markers (reflectors) are required by the US DOT and must be yellow(amber) in the front and red in the rear. And since all US cars must meet US DOT as well as the individual state DOT requirements, the state doesn't have to mention that as well.

Thanks for the explanation. I thought the phrase "turn signal" that the vehicle code refers to is the yellow amber turn signals located on the front headlights.

But why is it that the BMW 3 series can have white turn signal (front near headlights) covers as a sports package option. I know they have yellow bulbs though, so maybe this satisfies the DOT requirements that you mentioned.

Nonetheless, I would glady take yellow bulbs with white turn signal covers on the USDM AP1 headlights.

Anyhow, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse. Thanks again for the info.

I think what they mean is the headlight itself cannot have yellow tinting or blue tinting.

I like this one:

Driving with just parking lights on (24800 VC). Vehicles that have factory-installed automatic daytime running lights must meet federal requirements and are legal.
Too bad they don't enforce that. For some reason guys think this is "cool" and have forgotten that they're called "parking lights" not pimping lights.

Does this mean that the JDM AP1 lights are legal since it says, "must be white or yellow". If this is the case then why the hell didn't Honda use the white in US AP1 lights like they did for the JDM ones?
It's not the light color, it's the reflector IIRC. The JDM does not have a reflective corner in the headlight housing. Still does not explain the yellow lens.

The photo of the S2000 has the caption of "Photo of a multicolored headlight."

the way i allways understood it, the lights are illegal unless they are factory equipment. if you have a civic that comes with regular lights and then modify, then you are in trouble.
Actually, the way I understood the law is that you cannot alter your headlight housing. The HIDs are illegal because of this law- they are not specifically illegal to install.

In any case, stock headlights are obviously DOT approved.

The reflector is the legal requirement. You must have a reflector in the front and one in the rear per side. However, the front must be amber and the rear must be red. That's why you can't get a clear-corner option from the factory in the AP1 S.

And there is the answer.

But, like I mentioned, the BMW 3 series has clear-corners as a sports package option. The M3 has them as well. Many of the newer cars have them now.

I have to admit though, the AP2 headlights are a drastic improvement, however, I still dislike the freakin yellow ambers on the headlights...ruins the color consistency, imo.
