Best of luck to the family - a great tragedy. As this story shows, if you've had too much to drink - stay put or get a ride.

Also, be careful with fire (candles, cigarettes, etc) during the holidays. I lost my home last Sunday from the carelessness of my neighbor. It only takes a second and everything you own is damaged or destroyed.

Chris, I am very sorry to hear this horrible news. And to have it happen during Chrismas will just intensify the pain, even in years to come the Holiday season will be a reminder of this accident. I will pray for strength for your boss and his wife to deal with such a great loss. I can't imagine the pain. Drinking and driving is such a shame and soooo stopable.

Meat, I am also sorry to hear about the loss of you your home. I hope nobody was injured. I know it would be horrible to loose all of ones lifelong collection of "things", but over time many of them will be replaced. I wish you all the best!

In addition to drunk driving... Just taking your mind off of what you are doing can have catastrophic results as well.
Just a few days ago, Two local brothers were returning home from a day of skiing, and were probably excited about seeing each other during Christmas break. It only took a second, and the older brother crossed the center line and had a head on colision at about 65 mph.
The younger brother died instantly from a broken neck,,, the older brother died in my arms from a massive head injury. The other driver had air bags, and will be fine.
It was the most terrible call that I've been involved in. I found out later that they were the only two childern in that family.

In a matter of moments, many peoples lives were changed. Mine included.

Dave,

I could never do your job, as much as I would love to be able to help people the way you do, I just know that I couldn't live with the images of accidents like you just described. I am really thankful that there are people like you in the world who can and do go out every day to save other people's lives.

As far as the original post, that is just awful. I have a 10-yr old son and a wife that I love very much and I'm sitting here at work crying just even thinking about what my life would be like if I had to live knowing that I had survived a wreck that killed either of them.

I really wish people would think about the possible consequences when they drink and get behind the wheel. It really does only take a second to change a life or lives.

Sorry to hear about the news

I have a friend in Florida that works at Eglin AFB. At one of the entrances to the base they have a very smashed up car (I think its a civic, its so bad its not recognizable) and a sign in front saying to not drink and drive. My friend showed that to me, and whoever was driving in it died in that wreck.

This is one of the reasons why I am organizing a charity event for MADD. VTECnology PM me and maybe you can do an event in your state at the same time. If you don't know what I am talking about look at the thread below.

One interesting note Sondra, this is supposed to be the case... however, I myself can attest to the fact that I have asked a bar (on more than one occasion) to call me a cab because I was too drunk to drive. They outright refused and told me to leave. Now I was totally polite in asking and was not demanding. I find this type of action outrageous, they want you in the bar and take your money, but when it comes time for you to ask them a favor, they turn their backs. I ended up calling one of my friend's from a payphone several blocks away. I just wish the f*cking bar's would at least act more responsibly.

My heart goes out to you VTECnology... I have had a friend that was also hit by a drunk driver while I was in high school...

Chris,

Your message saddened me and angered me at the same time -- sadness for your friend and his tragedy and anger at the cowardess of our politicians (half of whom drive drunk themselves) in dealing with DWI laws. Here in Maryland our legislature recently lowered the alchohol blood content standard for DWI. The bastards should be forced to attend the funeral of every person in our state who is killed by a drunken fool.

We had a case here a month ago that was a perfect example -- a woman killed someone while driving under the influence, and she had been arrested eight times before for DWI. She should have been in jail -- permanently, but the laws simply aren't tough enough. This is murder, no less and no more -- the same crime, IMHO, as taking a gun a shooting someone to death.

My heart goes out for you and your friend.
