My HID's have a notched/stepped pattern in the center. In other words they do not project an even line across the combined beam. Both the right and the left project a beam with a step in the top line of ilumination.
Initially I thought I could adjust it out but it didn't work. As I adjusted I did discover a notch/step near the center in both of the beams. The left side of each individual beam is lower than the right. This makes it impossible to adjust it out and it makes it very noticeable to the driver.
Anyone else have this problem?

I'm not sure it is a problem, My car does the same thing as many others do. If I remember correctly the left side is lower. I would think it has to do with aiming the drivers side down, away from traffic.

The manual shows that this step pattern is to be expected. This is helpful in illuminating the road to the right while preventing blinding oncoming traffic on the left.

I have the same problem...or maybe it's a feature, huh? I once asked the mechanics at a Honda dealership to check it out, and they said that there's nothing wrong with the beams' alignments. But then again, these guys seem more interested to see if my windshield wipers work correctly on a dry windshield when they're asked to make an oil change - pricks!!
If anybody has been able to improve the beams' alignment, please post. It really shows with this car's sharp beam cutoff.

Yeah, each individual light is notched out that way, there's no way to really adjust it out. Both beams are aimed at the same height.
Here's the aiming instructions from the service manual, notice on page two how each beam is notched in the illustration.

You can't get it out -- as Prolene indicated, it's designed into the system to project the light higher to the right side of the road and lower to the left, for reasons that are obvious.
