Default Highway rpms

Ok, I've had my S2000 for about 2 weeks now, and I was just wondering, what rpm do you pull when driving at highway speeds @60mph. I know the S is a high rev engine and people have dynoed at 8900, but my last car was a jeep and it was a very low rev engine. I've had to adjust my driving style drastically (for the good) but wanted to see if my driving is comparable to everyone elses. Thanks.

I pull whatever the RPM's are in 6th going 60 MPH, unless I want to pass someone and then I pull whatever the RPM's are in 3rd after I downshift and go into warp.

Right around 4k at 75.

-Steve (who put 880 miles on his S2k this past Sunday with just 2 stops and a 90 pound labrador in the passanger seat).

I drive at fairly high rpm's. ON the freeway, going 60, I'm in fourth gear.

It depends if it is city highway or open road. I usually keep it in 4th for city highway and 6th for open road

What RPM are you guys cruising at in 4th gear? Is it very "comfortable"?

3,000-4,000 depending on cruising speed. It may seem high, but most of the 4 cylinders I've owned were in that range on the highway.

People are all over the place with this. I've been next to another S owner on the freeway at about 70MPH and I swear he was in 3rd gear. Yes, this engine is desigend to be a high revving engine, BUT...all motors, like hearts, have a limited number of revs. Use 'em now, or use 'em later. I personally keep them reasonable low unless I am out for fun. I'll VTEC a few times for fun but then I'll cruise in the approrpiate gear at around 3,500 - 4,000. I think some people live in VTEC...which is cool...but don't expect 200,000 miles on the motor if you do.

Just out of curiosity,

What happens if you forget to shift past 9000 rpm or if you accidently downshift from 6th to 3rd, 2nd, 1st at rpm stay high?
Would you risk blowing the engine?
My little 12-year-old wants to know.

Thanks, LT

1: The rev limiter kicks in at 9000 rpm, so you can't really "forget" without a nice jolt as the fuel gets cut off.

2: Assuming you are going say 80 in 6th.. and you want to shift into 4th but accidentally shift into second (this is called mis-shifting), and you dump the clutch the engine will do what's called "over rev" which will more than likely lead to "valve float" which is when the valves can't move fast enough, and the pistons smack the valves, and it's a big mess after that. This is a common problem with the current style Celica GT-S. The shift gates are very close, and many many people have shifted from 5th or 6th wanting 4th, but finding 2nd, and they just let out the clutch, and before they can catch it.. BAM!! They are getting a new engine.
