Will the manufacturer pay me for my time and efforts? If you read Mr. McCune's post on this topic, he alluded... no, he flat out claimed "extensive testing has been done to determine the temperature changes."
I feel what I've put forward is the best test because it's the only data-backed test we have at this point in time. Believe me, I wish the manufacturer would've clearly reported his findings (assuming they exist) before I decided to buy the product as I did on the butt-dyno opinions of the pro-grill members here in our online community.
Like I said, the choice is yours and my tests are not conclusive, but it's enough for me to have decided to remove it and be done with it. Tests and all.
Just as it is difficult to feel the 2-3hp gain of a J&R/MG Racing air filter, it may be the same case to feel the "+3hp" loss due to decreased airflow.
With this car, HP seems to be more hard to come by than others. My choice was to take performance over aesthetics.
If one wants to know how much restriction of air there may be, hold the grill out in the airstream and feel how much pressure there is against the grill. Such pressure may indicate a drop in airflow past the grill.
This is a great thread for discussion of the Front Grill. I am still planning on purchasing one for protection and appearance. I do not drive my cars hard not even the Vette I had. Gunning for a showdown at each opportunity is not why I bought my S2K or for that matter any car. I bought it because it is a really great car to drive as a roadster and because once in a while you need that VTEC boost when you have found a great road to run on and have fun. While I hit 130 mph some with the Vette it was not side by side with another fool
I think it comes down to which you prefer - absolutely the best performance available to you at all times or the protection and appearance the grill provides. It is your choice and depends solely on you. It would be good to know though the performance penalty paid for those of us who are hard chargers. And that would take some very carefully done tests with several cars in my opinion.
I was thinking some protection device on the front grill to stop rock and debris from entering the condensor/radiator. However, instead of a grill that was on the front. I was thinking of using a "mosquito" net or other netting that went behind the grill. Has anyone thought about doing this. With a wire mesh screen, I don't think the air flow would be hindered as much as a regular grill. Any Ideas? Just thought I would throw a thought out there.
I am envisioning a louvered grille made of horizontal slats, slightly slanted downward toward the car's front, and spaced so that if you looked at directly head on you'd juuuust barely see some space between them.
For discussion, consider 1.5" wide, 1/16 " thick slats every 1/2 inch from top to bottom of the grille area, with slanting downward by 1/4" (front compared to back). Thus if you looked DIRECTLY head on you'd see 3/16" spaces thru the setup.
I'd avoid the netting I think.
I'm thinking that this would keep out rocks, birds, garbage, armadillos, homeless people, etc, and maybe even some larger bugs. Most bugs might keep momentum and tend to hit the slats & hopefully stick (or at least slow down so as not to stick in the radiator) whereas the air would flow up and through. Probably thinner slats would be better. Am I ?
I have had a front grill on for about a year now, and it has saved me several times from debris hitting the radiator, see below:
Since I installed a snorkel-type intake, I cut a small section of the grill away where the intake opens in the grill area, hopefully this will provide the best of both worlds.
It's been years since SpaceNeedle posted this and it's been years since I've put another grill on my car.
Not only does it rob air from your stock air box, it also scrapes the paint where it makes contact. The whole I've never seen 4 bars argument is just looney to me.
