BUMP..

after 9 1/2 years I'm bringing this thread back to life.

So does the convertible top framework provide enough of a faraday shield to protect you from a lightning strike while in the S2K? I've got a hardtop but in the summer the HT is stored in the garage.

Found this on the NOAA weather site....

Convertible vehicles offer no safety from lightning, even if the top is "up". Other vehicles which are NOT SAFE during lightning storms are those which have open cabs, such as golf carts, tractors, and construction equipment.

Guess I'll avoid electrical storms when traveling in the S w/o the HT.

This is only partially correct... hardshell convertibles, such as the Lexus SC430, are just as safe as a standard vehicle. Softtops like ours are not... there's simply not enough of a metal skin to act as a ground plane.

Right. If you're enclosed in a metal top, whether folding, removable or welded to the frame you're protected from lightning. Fiberglass or soft tops offer no lightning protection.
