Thumbs up hitch mounted cargo box?

So, I'm planning on picking up an S2000 (used, probably 2003), but I have one problem. I have quite a bit of sports gear and I need to be able to take it with me.

I was wondering what everyone thought of mounting a hitch mounted cargo box like the Thule Transporter or Thule terrapin on the back of the s2000?

I already checked, you can get a 1 1/4" hitch for the s2000 and the Thule transporter will fit on that hitch, and all my gear should fit in the box.

So, with that said, is this a crazy idea that would never work, or is it actually feasible?

I realize it might look pretty weird, and I'm also a bit worried about handling effects, but I'm sick of driving around these nice sunny days with a roof over my head.

This guy towed a boat with what seemed like having no problems so I think you'll be OK. Some guys that track also have hitches where they carry their track wheels with them to their event. I was too lazy to search for both so here's one to give you something to look at.

I tow a tire trailer behind mine. It puts about 50lbs. of weight on the tongue. The car and the hitch don't even notice it.

I wouldn't worry too much depending on how much the box and equipment weigh. Keep in mind the box will hang out beyond the ball, so it will have a lever effect. So 50lbs. of box and equipment will be harder on the hitch than the 50lbs. of tongue weight that I have.

Yeah, the hitch (according to honda) can handle 200 lbs tongue weight. Doing the math, about 50 lbs on the tongue should actually give your car a 50/50 weight distribution.

On my side, the box is 76 lbs, my gear is probably about 75 lbs too. So, I figure I'm within the 200 lb limit.

then again, I'm not sure why I'm that concerned. two mountain bikes on a hitch mounted bike rack is probably really close to the kind of mass I'm dealing with.

also, the info on the tire-tail seems pretty appropriate as they're dealing with the same weight/torsion issues

I guess I'm now just trying to make sure that I'll be OK with a huge black box hanging off the end.
