hitting the rev-limiter

As much as I agree that letting the engine bounce off the revlimiter for long amounts of time is generally not a good idea, you don't have much to worry about if it happens occasionally. The rev limiter is there after all, to protect the engine from over-reving while accelerating. It cuts fuel until the rpm's drop, and then restores it to let you continue on your way. Although the original posters fear is somewhat justified with gravity, I don't think you need worry. I've never seen rev's higher than ~5k while rolling down a hill in 2nd gear, so unless it was incredibly steep or something, the gears would stop the wheels from unintentionally over-reving the engine, but just in case, avoid it in the future.

Going immediately from 200+ hp to minus hp would be very hard on the entire drivetrain.
Just out of curiosity, wouldn't it be nearly as bad to let off the gas entirely in order to shift at the power peak (around 8600)? Then you're going from an even higher HP level to "negative" HP as well.
