Honda tuning the F20C sound?
The nice thing about using the S2000 as a weekend car is that "new" feeling I get behind the wheel. Hop in the car, drive off and hit an open stretch of road. 6000..7000.....8000.....9000rpm. At this point I'm thinking :"geez is that engine loud!" Every week I'm taken by the sound of the F20C. Sort of a mix between F1 and a growling tiger.
Just for comparison sake, the K20 series engines have a completely different sound. Its more of a "zing" noise to redline.
But it got me thinking: Did Honda intentially tune the F20C to have a 90db roar, OR was the sound a side effect of an engine producing 120hp per liter?

I doubt they did anything to enhance the sound. They just didn't put much effort into reducing it since it's an open-top sportscar and sound deadening material just adds weight.

The sound of a car's engine does receive special attention from the manufacturer. Woodwork can you confirm? I have no doubt that time was invested to make the S2000 sound the way it does. I know for a fact that the Miata's engine note was tuned deliberately by Mazda to have just the right sound, so I can't believe Honda wouldn't do the same.

In the excellent book 'HONDA S2000' by Daniel F Carney and MBI Publishing, it makes mention on page 51, Quote: (Honda tested a wide array of exhaust systems to find the design that produced the most horsepower while still meeting government regulations)end quote:....I'm sure that would have included getting the 'note' just right as well....
