I guess we still have a long way to go before spell checkers will replace human editors.

There is a spellchecker available but it displays advertising. I don't like that idea much. I also find that my personal problem is not spelling a word correctly but spelling the right word at all. For some reason I type all the wrong words like "is" istead of "if". A spell checker had become quite useless in my case. See, I left that one in there. I spelled "had" instead of "has". I must be mental.

Typing seems to be my biggest problem. I have had a MS Natural keyboard at home for over a year now and am still not used to it.

You guys are nutty.

By the way, I wasn't trying to say that you were making accusations or anything, Strike.
Proper grammar--or an attempt at it--IS a lost art, and as I said, I agree. I guess I just get tired of the few people who get on boards and proclaim them homes of perfect pronunciation and exacting eloquency. Drives me nuts.

Life's too short!

Siper2,

I understand what you're saying but I've never come down on anyone here or on any other board for their spelling or grammar, even though I've been tempted. I've also never claimed to be the perfect speller or of having perfect grammar. As someone said, it's more important for everyone to be able to communicate and not be intimidated because they feel their spelling or grammar isn't up to snuff. That said, I think I'm entitled to voice my opinion that I would rather people learn to spell correctly instead of supplying them with a technological means to compensate for their deficiency. I get sick of reading the newspaper and seeing people who by chosen profession should be able to spell or use the appropriate form of a word not do so because they've obviously used a spell checker instead of proofing their own work. The end result is a newspaper article that resembles Chris' poem above. Alright, I've explained my position. This topic is going on way too long. I'm done with it.

You all know how I feel. The post by the English minor Siper2 was interesting. Suppose he had used his reasoning with his prof. I guess I'm so adamant about this because in the advertising business I used to own proofreading was very important in any published item. The client was always "responsible" for the final proofing; however, I've eaten more than one print run because of sloppy proofing because the client was always "right".

I often wonder if this trend continues that we may look forward to an Ebonics-based society where anything goes spelling and grammar-wise in the name of self-esteem/expression.
