Sorry for another gear thread.

This is a specific question that I didn't want to jump on some other thread.

I was thinking about how to describe how gears make a car faster. I know they don't add HP, but they feel like added HP.

So I was wondering if it'd also be similar to subtracting weight from the car.

If gears have a 10% reduction in *blank* (I don't know the word, something like resistance to turning).

If you took 10% weight off your car but kept the stock gears they'd have 10% less resistance to turning. It'd feel as if you had a 10% reduction in gears.

Would that be something like what you're getting with gears?

<I know there are other things about subtracting weight such being as easier to stop and turn, I'm just talking about the acceleration advantage you get from weight loss>

 

The best way would be through simple everyday devices, such as a pulley:

It is a force/distance tradeoff.

 

Feels like if you just added 25 RWHP,to your car.!!!

 

Think of it in terms of increasing mechanical advantage or "leverage". You can move the same weight much easier but you have to move the lever farther.
