I'm bringing this back from the dead becauase I have a question that relates to this topic.

I was going to get an alignment because I've lowered my car. But my friend tells me that I'm wasting my money by getting an alignment. He says this because my car drives very straight and true.. the tire wear is also pretty even. The only thing is that I went through my last set of tires VERY quickly. (under 7k) and these were suppose to have extremely good tire wear rating, with 40k tread warranty.

If it's been more than a year, or if you've never had it done at a good shop (Sears doesn't county) I'd say pony the cash up and just get one. My fronts have lasted 60k miles because I've had a few good alignments.

It's really hard to tell if everything is at it's best specs. Even after my drop the car would go straight without touching the wheel, but I was way out of spec. Afterward, the car felt 100x better. It's one of those things that can help, even if there is no problem you can feel.

Car tracking straight is NOT an indication of perfect alignment. You will thank yourself after having a proper alignment done to your car if you lower your vehicle. The car drives and feels much more confident when a proper alignment is done.
