How do you decelerate?

I'm a nub when it comes to manuals, but what exactly are the proper steps to rev matching?
blip throttle to where it will be at your current speed if you were already in that gear, while shifting down
release clutch
Easy right? If you'd be at 4k in 3rd, and 3k in 4th, then when you downshift from 4->3, you blip the gas up from 3k to 4k.
Easy right?
i always rev match, always. i kinda make a game out of touching my brakes as little as possible, trying to coast up to lights and stop perfect without touching my brakes at all is my favorite thing to do for some reason.

So, how does this actually aid you in slowing down? If you rev match so you don't get a jerk when shifting down, does this mean it'll take forever to actually stop?
I'm not speaking out of experience in any way, but let's say you're in 4th going 40 miles per hour, and you want to stop. So you'd rev match 4-3-2-neutral brake?
Once again, I'm like
If I'm taking this in right, rev matching just SLOWS you down. I mean, unless you're a reallly fast shifter, wouldn't you have to start downshifting really early?
Excuse my novice self.
