How do YOU shift from second to third?

Don't feel bad, Dave... I've never even heard of Contra, and I'm just a spring chicken!

My secret shifting code is "Klatu Parada Nicto."
I suspect the 20 and 30-somethings around here won't know that one!

I only shift the odd gears 1-3-5 and leave the evens alone. I figure if the odds wear out I will still have the evens to drive with. It avoids all of this messy 2-3 crap as well.

I like the

That's what the spring in the stick is for. It's lines the stick up on the 3/4 gate for you.

Taking the "diagonal" has made for a very notchy 2 - 3 shift for many people.
I'm not following this. Why would you "guide" it to the "left", when 3rd is to the right of 2nd? And why the need to "guide" it anywhere? That's what the spring in the stick is for. It's lines the stick up on the 3/4 gate for you.

Seriously, you should not have to think about shifting, it should be second nature by now. Plus, the gearbox will "put" the right gear in when you're throwing the shifter.
The only gears that cause a hint of effort is 5 and 6, because you'll be pushing it away from you (LHD) or pulling it towards you (RHD)

I don't guide anything. I've ended up in fifth gear too often in my brother's Prelude doing that.
I sometimes feel a little clunk in the shifter when going from 2 to 3...slowing the shift sometimes alleviates this.
Maybe this is what the OP was talking about.
Any way around this clunk? Or it's just the synchros doing they're job?

1. Perfectly normal.
2. Resulting from "going through the diagonal" instead of a more distinct "up, center, up" movement. Depending upon just how you do the diagonal, you could be actually partially "snagging" the 1st gear shift piece. This is why you really shouldn't be doing the diagonal.
3. You are really crappy at rev-match upshifting.

1 - 2: Pull down with palm facing me
2 - 3: Push diagnally -- let the shifter "guide" me ack to the neutral position a little
3 - 4: "back hand style" with palm facing passenger, without pushing the shifter out
4 - 5: just shove the thing hard to the right with palm facing down?
5 - 6: "back hand style" with palm facing passenger, while push the shifter out
I think that's how I shift? At least's how I shift in cars with longer throws. Never studied myself carefully while I'm driving the S ... I guess it doesn't matter too much, since the throw is so short anyway
