Default How to fix rust spot

I didn't know where to place this, but looks like most people with chips / dents etc put it in the talk section so I guess I will too.

What is the best way to fix this rust spot. I basically dinged it about 3 months ago, and I kinda let it go. Now it has rust developing on it, and I want to take care of it before it gets bad.

I was planning on using a very fine steel wool to scrape off the rust, and then just put some touchup paint over it. You can only see the spot when the door is open, so I am not worried to much about the color matching.

If I just use touchup paint, isn't the rust going to spread underneath? I want to get rid of the rust first, and then touch it up, unless I don't have to.

as long as the touch up paint covers it all it will seal it and will prevent any further rusting...

I had a spot like that on my Element. I cleaned out all the rust and then touched it up with some primer. Then I went over the primer with the colored touch up paint.

To get the rust out I used a small piece of fine grit sandpaper for the center area and a small pointed tool...like a small pick. The pick helped me clean out the rust closest to the edge of the chip.

Not good to paint over rust. I'd think you'd have to sand it down until the rust is gone, put touch up paint until it's above where the paint originally was, then sand that down with really fine sand paper, then put a coat of wax on.

You certainly have to sand it down first. Sanding pen or folded over corner of sandpaper. Then touch up paint. We have an aluminum hood, but on most cars this is the reason to touch up rock chips before they rust.

Use a rust neutralizer like Naval Jelly. It will chemically destroy the rust -- this is the sure-fire way to get rid of it. Immediately cover it with touch-up paint.

Be advised that OEM touch-up paint includes a very small steel brush that you can take the rust off the area. Then you can apply the paint.
