I know there are sports cars that incorporate fewer creature comforts than the S2k -- but frankly they don't sell well enough for Honda to go after that market. With the S2k, Honda attempted to actually produce the "hell for leather" sports car, and throw in just enough luxury items to make it sell in profitable quantities. But in no way did Honda produce a "luxury car" here, nor did they produce a "grand touring car." Hell, there is nothing wrong with this, as I bought an S2k knowing EXACTLY what I was buying. And I wanted it. I knew if I wanted a luxury car, a grand touring car, or a pickup truck, I would have to have a few more cars in my garage! And if I wanted a car that was fit to drive only in competition, I'd have to add a few more to that!

The S2k is exactly what it is: the most basic true sports car that is capable of selling in profitable quantities.

In a scale of 1 to 10, I give the S about 3-4.
It is a NICE car, but not luxurious.

Guys:

You know, there is a book out written by some Christian Fundamentalists called "The Purpose Driven Life" Now, while I don't share all their underlying philosophy, I am tempted to write my own book called "Purpose Driven Car Buying!"

In it, I would describe the purpose of the S2k as offering as much "hell for leather" sports car experience as is sellable. I would advocate that we all select our car purchases with a PURPOSE in mind. Are we going to be hauling 500 lbs. of maneur (as I will do next week)? Well then, the S2k is a very poor chioce! Are we going to be taking three people, their luggage, and two dogs on a 500 mile trip (as I am going to be doing in two weeks)? Then the S2k is not your choice either. Are you and your "significant other" planning to go on a ten day road trip with all your needed luggage? Then, the S2k might just not be the best choice. Do you want to take a group of diplomats on a tour of your city? Better nix the S2k.

But do you want to drive a car and have lots of fun? Bingo! You want an S2k!

Honda never marketed the S2k as a luxury car. For that, they've got the Acura TL and especially the RL (if you like these cars, which I do not.) They marketed the S2k as a sports car. The concept of "sports car" and "luxury car" are mutually exclusive. Get it?

To me, luxury is not the number of features included, but quality and feel of the features included, for which I give the S very high marks. Especially in the later cars as the picture of the interior posted earlier in this thread - that looks luxurious to me. No shoddy work in there, and I like the retro switch gear which others seem to hate. Like it or love it though, they are still done with quality, and to me, contribute to a luxury feel.

BMW luxury means that the inside must look like the cock pit of plane, with small knobs, buttons and switches all over doing all kinds of stuff that is nice to have (most times) but really not necessary for the job on hand. If we judge luxury by the feature count, then the car with TV, surround sound, computer desk etc. etc. etc. would be the most luxurious, no matter how dumb these features may be in a car designed for attacking corners.

S can't be luxury, it doesn't have a lot of buttons!

i agree with the "purpose" part. but i believe "sports car" and "luxury car" is not mutually exclusive. that's why we have "sports luxury"

anyone would agree that 911's and ferrari's are both luxurious, AND sporty, they have the best of both worlds. it is not the case for the S though, my base KIA Spectra is more luxurious than my S,
