Default How much air does a CAI actually get?

I was thinking about it, how much cold air does a CAI actually get. In the position it is in, it doesnt seem like much. Once you cut and re-attatch the both plastic flaps there are almost no holes for cold air to come through. I think there are like 3 small slits at the bottom. But I doubt any of the air comes up through these. Hydrolocking aside, wouldnt cutting the fake grill on the front bumper, right infront of the cai, allow better performance? Also maybe cutting a little bit larger slits at the bottom flaps? Or would doing this make no difference?

Maximum air pumping capacity of an S 2000 engine is around 500 c.f.m. ((stock))
Even if you put in a 12" diameter intake pipe,it will still be 500 c.f.m.!!!

Ok, but will the cutting allow for more actual COLD AIR to go into your intake? Or is it sucking so hard already that its pulling enough air out of the small slits already provided?

You are obsessing over something that has proven gains by dyno. If it were not getting enough air, do you think there would be these reported gains? The engine gets as much air as it needs through those slits. Opening up the fake air duct will simply make your filter filthy, faster and when it rains, it will just get water logged and even more filthy. Have a little confidence that those who came before you are satisfied with how it works.
However, if you feel the need to re-invent the wheel, go ahead. It's your time and I'm sure you'll "feel" immense gains.

Go to "sponsor Group Buys" on this board. Look for "AUT radiator cooling plate and CAI" thread. Go to page 27 on this thread and look at my mods. They are good for a small amount of power gain, a small amount of mpg gain, and cost a small amount of money. I've driven other s2ks with other intake mods, and think this is about as good as it gets, unless you are looking for intake sound (noise?). Because, with these mods, the intake is quieter than stock.

Thanks,
Richard

while those aut's look sweet, i love the look of my cai. makes so much more room in the engine bay. i was just wondering if the cai already sucks in so much air that cutting more passageway for air wont make a difference.
also, this is what i was wondering. if these people see gains of 2-4 hp with their cai. wouldnt there be larger gains on the street? isnt a dyno just your car standing still, with a fan going to the engine, not the intake? so the cai is just sucking up that standing air out of the little box it sits in.
if you were to cut the front passenger grill and were driving on the street, actual cold air would be getting to your engine instead of the standing air that just sits there on a dyno....
