I've been driving "stick shifts" so long I can no longer describe how it's done, it just happens. Ever try explaining how to ride a bicycle?

Ideally you'd engage the clutch at an rpm that matches the gearbox speed up or down -- rev matching. Max power occurs just before the red line. With the AP2 engine and heavier flywheel there seems to be enough rotational inertia that shifting at that point the engine speed drops to near that matching point. At least in my experience. The lighter flywheel with the AP1 engine won't maintain that rotational speed and may need some accelerator pedal to get it back up. The lighter flywheel, of course, revs quicker as there is less rotational mass to overcome. It's a trade off. Just requires some practice.

...but the heavier flywheel also necessitates a slower shift motion, if you want to avoid any crunchiness. So you don't lose as many revs due to momentum, but then you lose some due to taking longer to shift. So its kind of a wash.

IMO, the quicker to rev, quicker to fall back to idle and faster shift speed all align better to the cars mission. Being fun and responsive.

Lighter flywheel was a very welcome mod for me.

Just practice! And try not try to burn the clutch. This is not something you learn without practice. The S2000 is an easy car to shift correctly.

Note: Don't try too be to fast off the line. This is where you will do the most damage to your clutch. the S2000 is not a dragster. Most modern family sedans can now probably easily keep up on beat it off the line.

I don't think you should worry about shifting fast unless you can shift normally without rocking your passengers back and forth.

My shifting smoothed out a lot with this car when I started paying close attention to rev matching when shifting both up and down. I think the goal should be smooth. At least at first. Smoothness first, speed second.

remember_ shifting faster does not make the car go faster.

Shifting is a gentle two step process ( out of one gear, into next), that gets fast and smooth with practice

Doesn't upset the car and helps avoid the "money shift"
