Default How to tell a s2000 engine

My friend just bought a used s2000 recently. During his few weeks of ownership, he told me that for some reason, he suspect that it's not the true s2000 engine. Well......since I also owned a s2000, he came to ask me how to tell that the previous owner didn't swap it out with another honda engine.

Being the non-so technical guy, I told him....."Um...I'm not too sure."

Fellow sk2 owners, how do you tell that it's a s2000 engine? I believe that the engine type is called F20C. But how do you tell that it's a F20C? VIN number or lable on the engine?

Pop the hood on both cars, if the valve cover and intake manifold look the same, it's a S2k motor. The engine # in stamped into the surface of the block, at the left front corner. A 2.0Liter will have the # F20C1, a 2.2Liter will be a F22C1

And as Slow mentioned in another thread, not many Honda (or other) engines will fit as it's longitudinally mounted. I would say that unless you can see some very obvious modifications (mounts, accessories etc) then it is pretty much a certainty that it is an F2x engine.

Also check to see if the VIN matches the car and the engine block. That will show you if the motor was replaced with another F2xC motor.

I didn't want to be the one to ask, but I'm going to.... what gives him the idea that it isn't a "real" s2000 engine? You owned one, does it pull like yours did? Still vtec at 6k? Goes to 9k (8.25k for '04-->)? Nothing insulting intended, just curious what would give him that idea.

I havent heard of any other engine that would fit in the car. BTW I havent checked mine, but I hear the VIN on the engine will be off by a couple numbers at the end.

Well, that's the thing. I couldn't think of a vtech engine that rev as high as the s2000 engine. Wasn't sure, so didn't want to say it's a s2000 engine.

The other was that his is a 02' and mine is a 03'. I raced him couple times, but it will not for the life of that car pulled as good as mine. You may think its the driver. Think not....we even switch cars. For a car that's one year older than mine, i didn't think that it had that much wear and tear on the car. Sometimes people abuse the car and problems or power lose occur(You never know). But I had rule that factor out since I didn't think wear and tear makes that much of a difference anyway. By the way, his car got an intake, so it should match my stock at least.

So basically, it was boiled down to 2 answers. It's a s2000 or a B18x. I haven't got the chance to check the engine stamps, so I'll probably do that later to confirm.

I'm 99.999% sure that there are no other Honda engines that even spin the right way to be mounted in this car except the K20 series.

Let's see, what else...

The F20 sticker on the front of the engine to the left of the crank pulley is a good clue...

If it revs to 9,000 then there is probably no reason to look further

IIRC all the Honda engines now spin clockwise. Justa bout everything before the S2000 were anti-clockwise.
